mclaren wins big.

McLaren Construction is enjoying a significant boost to it’s order books on the back of three recently secured contracts with a combined value of circa £347M. What makes these contracts so exciting is that they are all delivering to a different customer market, proving that McLaren is a truly versatile business that is in major growth mode.

Residential Scheme in Acton

The first contract is delivering 188 homes in the Ealing council borough of Acton. These will entail three multistorey buildings, each with a defined purpose. A four storey building will consist of six large flats, an eight storey building will house 71 retirement flats which will be offered at London Living Rent, whilst a 20 storey tall apartment building will house 111 flats, of which 90 will be offered on a shared ownership basis.

This ambitious project is a true community build, redeveloping the Steyne estate and delivering 78 square metres of outdoor community space, which will be shared with residents from neighbouring boroughs Moreton Towers and Rufford.

McLaren will be working alongside Karakusevic Carson Architects and Beyond Carbon to deliver these properties to challenging energy efficiency targets. The aim is for 71 of the properties to conform to the Passivhaus standard, which will provide high levels of occupant comfort with minimal energy output.

Work on this project commenced in March 2023 and is planned to complete by early 2026.

Angel Square Refurbishment

McLaren Construction have been awarded a £94M contract by developer Tishman Speyer to refurbish Angel Square in the North London borough of Islington, with work planned to begin in June 2023 and to complete by the end of 2024.

This project aims to transform three existing buildings into one space which will host 188,000 square feet of office space, an affordable workspace area, a public house and a cafe. Whilst the refurbishment will make use of the existing structures, work will be required to infill a courtyard, demolish an upper level and create two new floors with roof terraces, all whilst reducing the embodied carbon of the building.

The company will be taking an innovative approach to this refurbishment, installing photovoltaic roof panels and glass reinforced concrete facades to replace the original brick ones. This design, which makes great use of existing infrastructure, will allow McLaren to deliver a modern and practical space with high levels of environmental performance in a reasonably short timescale.

ExCeL London Expansion Project

A third contract that McLaren Construction went to site on earlier in the year is the ExCeL London Expansion Project which will deliver significant enhancements to the venue's conference, exhibitions and event facilities.

An increased footprint of 25,000 square metres will connect seamlessly to the existing site, offering not only modern and functional exhibition and convention space but also improved catering facilities and beautiful outdoor space, which will include terraces, leisure facilities and a landscaped dock edge.

Working alongside Grimshaw Architects, Gardner & Theobald, Campbell Reith and Hoare Lea, the project will seek to achieve BREEAM excellence standards through the delivery of a Net Zero carbon-ready building that will include a host of sustainability solutions such as photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, air source heat pumps and hybrid ventilation systems.

Social Benefits

Each of these projects delivers a range of social benefits. The affordable housing in Acton project will create homes that will allow local residents to remain in their local area, whilst the ExCeL project is anticipated to boost tourism, and, therefore, the economic potential of the city of London.

Each project will also create a number of jobs, ranging from apprenticeships through to permanent employment. These jobs will include construction positions, management and other indirect positions that will be required during and after the completion of the builds.
